Samsungs Galaxy S5 Attracts a Huge Upgrade Crowd 21 Percent of Users Trading in Their Old Phone Are Upgrading to the Flagship Device, according to CompareMyMobile

CompareMyMobile conducted a survey of everyone recycling their old mobile phone after the Galaxy S5 launch, asking what they are upgrading to. The results show a great consumer response to Samsungs new device.

Key findings:

????21.2 percent of all people trading in old phones on CompareMyMobile since 11/4 are upgrading to Samsungs Galaxy S5.
????A lower 13.21 percent of all people are upgrading to Apples iPhone 5S.
????Samsungs Galaxy S4 is the top device being traded in for a Galaxy S5.
????Samsung currently makes up 42.99 percent of the smartphone trade-in market ahead of Apple and HTC.

One month on from the international release of Samsungs Galaxy S5 launch, survey results show that a huge wave of people are rushing to upgrade to the new device.

Of all the people trading in old smartphones on CompareMyMobile since the launch day on 11th April, 21.2 percent of people told the site that they are upgrading to the Galaxy S5. A lower 13.21 percent said they were upgrading to the iPhone 5S and a 5.22 percent said they would get the new HTC One M8.

Previous site research, before the launch, showed that over a third of all people upgrading to the Galaxy S5 previously owned an iPhone - so the site says it isn't a surprise to see two Apple iPhone models in this top five list.

CompareMyMobile has seen a much larger surge in trade-ins than they would expect to see for a non-Apple device though. Before this year such a spike would not usually be expected on a non-iPhone launch.

This trade-in surge, since the Galaxy S5 launch, has actually caused a drop in trade-in values across the Samsung Galaxy range.

Samsung Galaxy devices losing the most value follow the Galaxy S5 release:

1.????Galaxy S4 Zoom: 33.77 percent drop

2.????Galaxy S3 LTE: 16.73 percent drop

3.????Galaxy S4 Mini: 15.97 percent drop

4.????Galaxy S3: 13.6 percent drop

5.????Galaxy S2: 11.43 percent drop

Site experts say that this is a huge decrease in value when you consider that within the same timeframe a month before, the Galaxy S3 only lost 2.31 percent of its value, and the S4 Zoom only lost 8.48 percent.

The increase in Samsung trade-ins has made an even larger impact on the smartphone trade-in market too. The beginning of 2014 marked the first time a brand other than Apple topped the top traded in brand list as Samsung took the lead following the Galaxy Note 3 launch.

A further trade-in boost following the Galaxy S5 release has consolidated Samsungs place as the top traded-in brand but experts think it will be interesting to see what effect the iPhone 6 release will have on the market.

Gadget recycling comparison engine CompareMyMobile conducted a survey following the HTC One M8 release, asking consumers trading in their old phone what they are upgrading to. The site found:

????46.18 percent of people upgrading to the HTC One (M8) are trading in an old HTC smartphone
????23.74 percent of HTC One (M8) upgraders are trading in an Apple device
????21.29 percent of all people upgrading to the HTC One (M8) are trading in a Samsung handset
????13.24 percent of all people upgrading to the new HTC One (M8) are trading in an old HTC One

Following the launch of the HTC One (M8) a month ago, CompareMyMobile have seen a 20 percent spike in the number of old HTC handsets being traded in on the site. HTC One trade-ins have seen a 129 percent spike since the launch too.

The site say that this data really consolidates results from its latest survey. CompareMyMobile found that 46.19 percent of all people who said they are upgrading to the latest HTC One (M8) were trading in their old HTC. Results also show that 13.24 percent of all people upgrading were trading in the original HTC One.

CompareMyMobile says that this shows really strong brand loyalty, especially when compared to previous survey results.

Co-founder of the site, Ashley Turner, says: Weve noticed a great fan following online for HTC owners all our HTC news features generate comments that display huge loyalty and satisfaction. This is reflected in our recent survey data showing that HTC have one of the lowest rates of brand transition in consumer device upgrades.

Survey results do show that HTC is drawing in some Apple and Samsung users too though. 23.74 percent of HTC One (M8) upgraders previously owned an iPhone, and 21.29 percent previously owned a Samsung device.

CompareMyMobiles data also shows that around 8 percent of people upgrading were trading in a Samsung Galaxy S4 and 7 percent were trading in an iPhone 5 as people coming to the end of their contracts with certain brands are choosing to switch.

Currently HTC makes up 10.02 percent of all trade-ins on the site up from 7.51 percent before the HTC One M8 launch.

Samsung currently makes up the highest number of smartphone trade-ins on CompareMyMobile, having seen a huge spike following its Samsung Galaxy S5 launch. The Galaxy S4 saw a 150 percent spike in trade-ins after the event.

Site experts say that before last year it was unusual to see such trade-ins spikes for non-Apple devices the change seems to mirror consumer trends in the smartphone market, as other manufacturers start to deliver competitive devices.
